Quentin Tarantino, the acclaimed director known for vowing to make just 10 films, has shed light on why his rumored final project, The Movie Critic, was canceled. The filmmaker, whose 2019 release Once Upon a Time in Hollywood marked his ninth feature, confirmed during a recent interview with The Church of Tarantino podcast that the decision was far simpler than industry speculation suggested.
“It was too much like the last one,” Tarantino admitted, explaining that The Movie Critic would have revisited Los Angeles during the New Hollywood era—a setting he had already explored extensively in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“I wasn’t really excited about dramatizing what I wrote when I was in pre-production,” he continued. “There was nothing to figure out. I already kind of knew, more or less, how to turn L.A. into an older time.”
The announcement comes after months of speculation that the cancellation stemmed from pressures to protect his legacy. Many industry insiders suggested Tarantino wanted to bow out on a high note, avoiding a project that might dilute his career-defining filmography. The director, however, dismissed such notions, emphasizing a more personal and practical reasoning behind the decision.

While The Movie Critic is on hold for now, Tarantino hinted that he may revisit the script later. In the meantime, he is shifting focus to other creative ventures. These include writing The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by David Fincher, which will follow Brad Pitt’s aging film star character.
Tarantino is also developing a stage play, set to debut in London’s West End, before finally taking on his 10th and final feature film. The two-time Oscar winner also pushed back against claims that he was overly cautious or “fragile” about preserving his legacy.
“It’s a little crazy to listen to podcasts and hear all these amateur psychiatrists psychoanalyze as if they f—ing know what they’re talking about,” he said. “I’m not paralyzed with fear. Trust me.” Tarantino’s comments offer fans rare insight into his creative process and the careful decisions guiding the close of his filmmaking career. With one final film remaining, audiences are left anticipating what the director will ultimately choose to cap his storied career.
