Nikki Reed is opening up about how she and husband Ian Somerhalder are raising their kids, and she’s keeping it thoughtful, intentional, and very grounded in real-world values. The Twilight star recently sat down for a conversation on Dear Media’s The Skinny Confidential: Him and Her Show podcast, where she gave a rare peek into how they’re parenting their 7-year-old daughter, Bodhi, and their younger son, whose name they’ve chosen to keep private.
She got real about how the world their children are growing up in is wildly different from the one she and Ian knew. And for Nikki, that means making privacy and mindfulness a top priority in their household.
“It’s a responsibility of parents to teach children how to be mindful human beings, how to respect people’s privacy — and I’m starting to see schools do that now,” Nikki shared, reported US Weekly.
Known for her passion for conscious living, Nikki didn’t just speak as a mom but also as someone who’s been in the public eye long enough to see how the rules of privacy have shifted, especially in a world that seems obsessed with oversharing.
“Privacy is our greatest form of currency in a world where everything lives out there. We are in a culture of oversharing,” she said, pointing out how easy it is to forget that personal space, even online, still matters.

Rather than simply complaining about how the digital world has taken over or hiding her family away from the spotlight, she’s all about using this moment as a teaching tool. Her focus isn’t on shielding her children from everything but on helping them understand how to move through the world with respect and awareness.
“I’ll just say, the world changed a lot with the invention of the iPhone,” she said. “I think as human beings, technology has moved so fast and we have not put parameters in place to continue to view ourselves and other people as human beings.”
That kind of honesty is refreshing — and timely. With so many parents wondering how to handle screens, social media, and the flood of information kids face today, Nikki is leaning into her version of parenting that’s both modern and mindful.
“My goal and mission is to not just sit around and feel sorry or complain about what the consequence of that might be but instead take it as a moment for education,” she said. “We have to talk to and teach our children how to be conscious of other people.”
She’s not trying to be preachy. She’s just speaking from experience — and reminding us that being intentional about how we raise kids in a tech-saturated world might be one of the most important things we can do. For Nikki and Ian, parenting isn’t just about love and care. It’s also about teaching kindness, boundaries, and the value of a little privacy.
