Amal Clooney has opened up about the unique ways she and husband George Clooney protect their family’s privacy, including a surprising rule for guests in their home.
The internationally renowned human rights lawyer, who shares 7-year-old twins with the Oscar-winning actor, revealed in an interview with Glamour magazine that maintaining privacy in today’s world has become increasingly difficult, prompting the couple to adopt some unconventional methods.
“Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult,” Amal shared. “That’s also why we entertain a lot at home.”
To ensure those moments stay truly private, Amal implemented what she calls a “phone basket” — a rule where all guests are required to surrender their phones when visiting.
“It’s important to get that balance where you have time alone with your family and with your friends, where people feel like you can have a safe and frank exchange,” she explained.
The Clooneys, who married in a lavish 2014 ceremony in Venice, have long been vocal about their efforts to shield their children from public exposure. Amal emphasized that one of the most challenging parts of parenthood is navigating the increased intrusions that come with fame.

“After becoming a parent, some of the intrusions feel more troubling,” she noted. “We do the best we can to minimise any impact on our children.”
“We don’t put our children out there — we’ve never put their photo out there or anything like that,” the 47-year-old added, reinforcing the couple’s firm stance on privacy.
George Clooney, for his part, echoed those sentiments in a previous interview with PEOPLE, where he spoke about the profound changes that marriage and fatherhood have brought into his life.
“In marriage, and now with the kids, you give away the selfishness of only looking out for yourself,” the actor said. “It’s a wonderful thing. Amal and I talk about it every day. We feel so lucky.”
The ER star and his wife now prioritize family when choosing work projects, ensuring that their schedules allow them to spend meaningful time together.
While both are global public figures — he in entertainment and she in international law — the Clooneys have managed to carve out a private life, marked by strong boundaries, deliberate choices, and, apparently, a phone basket that’s become essential to keeping their family moments truly their own.
