President Donald Trump has responded to fierce criticism over an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus Christ not by stepping back, but by posting another religious-themed image of himself on Truth Social.
The new post, shared Wednesday morning, featured a screenshot of an image originally published on X showing Jesus embracing Trump. The account behind the image had captioned it: “I was never a very religious man … but doesn’t it seem, with all these satanic, demonic, child sacrificing monsters being exposed … that God might be playing his Trump card!”
The language appeared to draw directly from the QAnon movement, which holds that Trump is secretly battling a shadowy cabal of child traffickers who pull the strings of global power. Trump offered no such context in his own post, simply writing: “The Radical Left Lunatics might not like this, but I think it is quite nice!!!”
The escalation comes just days after Trump’s earlier AI-generated image — depicting him in the likeness of Jesus Christ — ignited a storm of condemnation that cut across political and religious lines. Even figures who broadly support the president joined clergy members in denouncing the image as sacrilegious and blasphemous.
The backlash was further inflamed by Trump’s simultaneous personal attacks on Pope Leo XIV, who had spoken out against the loss of life in the Iran war. Trump eventually deleted the original post, but his explanation only deepened the controversy.
He claimed he had not even recognized the image as religious in nature, suggesting he believed it depicted him as a Red Cross doctor. The remark drew widespread ridicule, including from prominent supporters such as podcaster Joe Rogan.
Rather than distancing himself from the controversy, Trump’s latest post suggests he has little intention of moderating his approach to religious imagery or the reactions it provokes. For his critics, the posts represent a troubling conflation of political identity and sacred symbolism.
For his supporters, they appear to reinforce a messianic narrative that has long surrounded his political brand. The White House has not issued a formal statement on either post.
