“I am shocked we are peddling tabloid garbage”: Kristi Noem pressed on alleged affair with corey lewandowski during tense hearing

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem faced pointed questions during a congressional hearing on Wednesday, including a highly personal one that sparked a tense exchange on Capitol Hill and drew widespread reaction online.

Noem appeared before lawmakers while her husband sat behind her in the hearing room. During the session, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) questioned Noem about Corey Lewandowski, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump who has served as an adviser to the administration.

Kamlager-Dove raised concerns about Lewandowski’s role and past controversies, including allegations of misconduct and questions about his qualifications. The California lawmaker pointed to Lewandowski’s history, referencing issues such as previous misconduct claims, lack of experience within the Department of Homeland Security, a record involving physical battery and sexual harassment allegations, an incident involving bringing a loaded firearm into a federal building, and accusations of illegal lobbying for a Venezuelan oil company.

She then asked Noem a direct and unexpected question. “At any time during your tenure, as director of the Department of Homeland Security, have you had sexual relations with Corey Lewandowski?” Kamlager-Dove asked Noem.

The question immediately created an awkward moment in the hearing room. Noem did not respond with a direct denial. Instead, she sharply criticised the question itself.

“I am shocked we are peddling tabloid garbage,” Noem said. “Ma’am, one thing I would tell you is that he is a special employee who works for the White House — there are thousands of them in the federal government — and is an advisor and has no authority to be making any decisions.”

As the exchange continued, both lawmakers began speaking over one another during the tense moment. Kamlager-Dove argued that the question was relevant to concerns about professional conduct and judgment within government leadership.

“It is OK for you to be offended by the question… but it is also a real question, and you should be able to answer the question, clearly, and without any hesitation if someone is asking if you or any federal official is sleeping with their subordinate,” Kamlaager-Dove said. “That should be the easiest… You should want to answer that question because it is not about your sex life, it is about your judgment.”

Noem pushed back, calling the suggestion offensive and saying the allegations had been dismissed before. She said the claim was “offensive” and that the question has been “refuted for years.”

Despite that response, the moment quickly spread online, with many commentators noting that Noem had not directly answered the question with a simple yes or no.

Some social media users openly questioned the response. “That’s not a denial,” influencer Lucas Sanders wrote on X.

“I didn’t hear a no,” nurse Richard Staple, BSN, RN, wrote on X. Others made comparisons to past political controversies.

“Bill Clinton would like a word,” farmer Derek Cressman wrote on X. The debate also spread to other platforms.

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes,'” writer and artist Suanne Laqueur wrote on Bluesky. “Doesn’t sound like a no…” consultant Stuart Tan wrote on Bluesky.

The exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the hearing, highlighting the political tensions and personal controversies that can surface during congressional oversight sessions.
