Wisconsin man awaiting trial on separate felony now charged with child abuse

Prosecutors have charged a 38-year-old man with multiple felony offenses after authorities say he violently threw a five-month-old baby across a hallway during a chaotic incident in Milwaukee late last year.

According to court records, Sergio Chavez-Morales is facing two felony counts of child abuse for intentionally causing harm, along with a felony count of bail jumping. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Dec. 22 near North Teutonia Avenue and West Roosevelt Drive.

The criminal complaint states that officers with the Milwaukee Police Department were dispatched to the area following reports of a weapons complaint. When police arrived, they learned Chavez-Morales was allegedly being chased by another individual who was armed with a knife. Officers were able to intervene and separate those involved before the situation escalated further.

After the parties were separated, a witness provided a disturbing account to the police. According to the complaint, the witness said they observed Chavez-Morales grab a five-month-old infant and throw the baby across a hallway. The impact reportedly caused the baby to cry out in pain, prompting immediate concern from those nearby.

Emergency responders transported the infant to Children’s Wisconsin, where doctors conducted X-ray studies to assess possible injuries. Authorities said no immediate fractured bones were detected, though officials have not disclosed whether additional medical evaluations were performed or if longer-term injuries were ruled out.

Prosecutors noted that Chavez-Morales was already out on bond at the time of the alleged assault. Court records show he was facing a separate felony case involving charges of strangulation and suffocation, making the new allegations particularly serious in the eyes of the court. The bail jumping charge reflects prosecutors’ claim that he violated the conditions of his release when the Dec. 22 incident occurred.

In addition to Chavez-Morales’ arrest, police also took a 38-year-old woman into custody at the scene. Authorities have not released details about her role in the incident, and it is unclear whether she is facing any charges related to the case.

The case has raised renewed concerns about child safety and repeat offenders within the criminal justice system, especially when individuals accused of violent crimes are released on bond. Prosecutors have not yet said whether they will seek additional charges or request higher bail conditions as the case moves forward.

Chavez-Morales is expected to make an initial court appearance in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, where a judge will determine bail and schedule future proceedings.
