“Embarrassing at Best”: Why King Charles Cannot Remove Prince Andrew From the Line of Succession

King Charles is reportedly grappling with an uncomfortable reality. Even after stripping Prince Andrew of his royal titles and honours, there is one privilege he cannot revoke. Andrew remains in the line of succession, a detail that has sparked renewed discussion among royal watchers.

The issue resurfaced after Buckingham Palace released a statement on October 30 reaffirming the King’s support for abuse victims. This came after Prince Andrew’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein were thrust back into the spotlight. Although Andrew has been removed from public duties and lost his titles, the monarchy has no mechanism to take him out of the succession line.

Royal commentators say the situation is awkward for the palace. Andrew, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s son, is still eighth in line to the throne. Hilary Fordwich told Fox News, “Given Andrew’s ghastly behaviour, his still being in the line of succession is … embarrassing at best.”

But she also noted that there is one small comfort. Andrew is far from the top of the list. “He’s so far down the line behind the Sussex children, there’s little risk of him ever becoming king,” the royal expert added. Even so, the topic remains sensitive. Fordwich explained that removing a royal from the line of succession would raise serious constitutional concerns.

“There is concern that any ad hoc removal of unpopular royals could make the institution look more like a political machine than a stable hereditary monarchy,” she said. The monarchy depends on the idea of continuity, not selective reshuffling.

Other royal commentators agree. Helena Chard, a British broadcaster and photographer, said the public should not worry about Andrew’s position in the order of succession. “It is unlikely he’ll impact the line of succession, given the number of younger royals ahead of him.”

Despite the embarrassment this situation creates for the palace, experts stress that the process for succession is intentionally rigid. Changing it for one person, no matter how controversial, would set a precedent that could destabilise the monarchy’s carefully preserved image of non-political consistency.

Andrew remains where he is in the line. His ranking carries no real influence, but it continues to spark debate about how the royal family balances tradition with modern expectations.
