A 17-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his 73-year-old grandmother at a local church in Athens, Mississippi. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as Jadynn Hamilton, is being held on a $500,000 bond following the incident on October 29.
According to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley, the victim, Ollie Hamilton, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. She was discovered inside Smith Chapel Holiness Church, located along Burr Road, where the attack occurred. Sheriff Kevin Crook described the tragedy as “one of the worst kinds,” noting the close relationship between the victim and the suspect.
“This is a tragedy of the worst kind because you’ve got a beloved church member, family member, and community member killed, and you come to find out within 24 hours she was killed by another beloved family member,” Crook said. “If somebody is not able to control their impulses and they reach that point, I don’t think it really matters who the victim is at the time.
If it got them to that level of anger, they’re going to lash out at whoever – it just happened to be his grandmother.” The sheriff’s office received a 911 call at 5:45 p.m. Deputies and investigators quickly responded to the scene, where Mrs. Hamilton was found near a doorway leading to the church kitchen.
Crook said that as deputies interviewed witnesses and processed evidence, signs began to point toward a family member. “The longer that investigation went, the evidence started pointing in a certain direction. A young man had supposedly gone for help early on after the attack. We ended up bringing him in last night, and he confessed to the crime,” he explained.
Authorities confirmed that Hamilton had no previous criminal record or history with law enforcement. Crook encouraged families to use the tragedy as a reminder to communicate more openly with young people who may be struggling.
“Try to learn from every tragedy. Were there signs? Were there things you could point back to and say, ‘Maybe we could have gotten this information to the right people?’ A lot of stuff happens among our youth that isn’t communicated a lot of times,” the sheriff said.
Community members described Mrs. Hamilton as a deeply respected and caring figure. “She was a pillar of the community, a pillar of the church, and somebody a lot of people counted on and depended on,” Crook said. “It was obvious she was well-loved.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together what led to the fatal attack.
