Georgia Missing 6-month-old baby found dead in dumpster; father charged with murder

Authorities in Georgia are investigating the tragic death of a six-month-old baby whose body was discovered inside a dumpster days after he was reported missing.

According to the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, the infant, identified as Nnakai Pratt, was found on Tuesday near an apartment complex in Riverdale, Georgia, where he had last been seen. The heartbreaking discovery came two days after his disappearance was reported to police on Sunday.

“This is a nightmare. Makes you want to hold your kids tighter at night,” said neighborhood resident Meshia Sikes, speaking to WANF. “We are going to feel it for a while. I’m not sure we will be able to forget this.”

Police said Nnakai’s father, Antonio Pearce, initially told investigators that he was robbed at gunpoint and that the alleged assailants took his baby before fleeing “in an unknown direction.” However, detectives quickly found inconsistencies in Pearce’s story and uncovered physical evidence suggesting foul play.

As the investigation progressed, authorities began to view Pearce as the primary suspect in his son’s disappearance. He was first arrested on Sunday on unrelated charges, including driving with a suspended license and a child restraint violation. Later, police confirmed that Pearce had been charged with murder in connection with the baby’s death.

Residents of the apartment complex expressed shock and sorrow upon hearing the news. “Heartbroken. These little ones, the families who live here, they do love their kids,” said resident Tracy Karch. “This is a very family-oriented place. This is going to hurt the community really, really bad.”

Pearce appeared in court on Wednesday, where he was also arraigned on unrelated drug charges. Court records now show that he faces a long list of charges connected to Nnakai’s death, including murder, making false statements, concealing a death, tampering with evidence, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, child cruelty, and falsely reporting a crime.

During the bond hearing, Judge Keisha Wright Hill addressed the contradictions in Pearce’s statements. “You’re also charged with false statements in that you did provide contradictory statements in the investigation of a missing child, and when witness accounts verified your contradictory statements, as you admitted to concealing and falsifying material facts,” she said.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Pearce has obtained legal representation. The investigation into the death of baby Nnakai Pratt continues, leaving the Riverdale community devastated and searching for answers in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.
