Authorities in Rowan County, Kentucky, have launched a double homicide investigation after a mother and daughter were found dead in their home. A man identified as a person of interest is now in custody, facing murder charges.
According to the Rowan County Coroner’s Office, the case began around 11 a.m. Friday, when Morehead Police Dispatch received a 911 call. A concerned coworker, who noticed their colleague had not reported for work, conducted a welfare check and then alerted authorities.
First responders were dispatched to a residence on Spring Street, located off Flemingsburg Road in the northern part of Rowan County. Upon arrival, they made a grim discovery: the bodies of 37-year-old Kayla Blake and her 13-year-old daughter, Kennedi McWhorter.
The Kentucky State Police (KSP) quickly opened an investigation and identified 44-year-old Joshua W. Cottrell of Morehead as the primary suspect. By early afternoon, troopers had tracked Cottrell to a hospital in the Paducah area.
At approximately 2 p.m. Friday, he was located, treated for unspecified reasons, and then released into police custody. Following his release, he was charged with two counts of murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence. He is currently being held at the McCracken County Jail, according to local CBS affiliate WYMT.
The deaths of Blake and her daughter have left the Morehead community shaken. Residents described the neighborhood as typically quiet and safe, making the news of a double homicide especially difficult to process.
Although details about the circumstances leading to the killings have not yet been released, state police confirmed that their investigation remains active. Authorities have not provided information about a possible motive, nor have they disclosed how the victims were killed.
Rowan County officials say more updates will be released as the case develops. For now, investigators are urging the public to allow the process to move forward without speculation. The coroner’s office confirmed the severity of the situation in a statement: “A double murder investigation is underway,” underscoring both the gravity of the crime and the ongoing nature of the case.
As the community mourns, attention will remain on the court proceedings and whether new details emerge about what led to the tragic deaths of a mother and her young daughter.
