More than a month after a teenager was shot while burying his guinea pig, police have arrested and charged a neighbor in connection with the crime. John Martin Dixon was taken into custody and faces two counts of aggravated assault for the July 17 shooting of 18-year-old Emmanuel Menchaca in Houston’s South Park neighborhood.
Authorities said Menchaca was in his yard on Belgard Street, north of Bellfort Avenue, with his 12-year-old brother when the shooting occurred. The brothers were burying their pet guinea pig, Cookie, when gunfire erupted. Emmanuel was struck three times in the back.
Menchaca, who had been preparing to start college in the fall, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and spent weeks in the intensive care unit. He has since returned home but continues to recover from his injuries. Community group FIEL has supported the family and pressed for charges, told Houston-based ABC affiliate KTRK.
They said Menchaca’s younger brother identified Dixon as the shooter and witnessed the entire incident. At a news conference organized by FIEL, Menchaca described how the shooting has altered his life. “This whole event really changed my life by changing everything I used to do. Before all this, I used to be really physical, going out and staying busy. Now, I just wake up and can’t really do much,” he said.
His mother, Andrea, recounted the terrifying moments that morning. She said her son stumbled into her bedroom bleeding heavily. “He said, ‘Mom, I love you, Dad, I love you, I’m not going to make it,’” she told KHOU 11. Andrea said she cannot understand why her son was targeted.
“He buried the guinea pig on my property, never stepped foot, never laid a hand on the resident’s property,” she said, emphasizing that the shooting was unprovoked. The arrest brings some relief to the family, who had been waiting weeks for answers. For them, Dixon’s charges represent the first step toward accountability, though the long recovery process for Menchaca remains difficult.
Local leaders and activists have pointed to the case as an example of the urgent need for community safety and justice. As Emmanuel continues to heal, the family says their priority is ensuring he regains as much of his independence as possible, even as they push for justice through the courts.
In a GoFundMe for medical and moving expenses, the victim’s mother speaks fondly of her injured child – who has since begun to attend college in San Antonio.
