A Virginia man was sentenced to life in prison Friday morning after being convicted of first-degree murder in the 2024 death of his former friend. Dustin Dove appeared in Waynesboro Circuit Court for the sentencing hearing, following a jury verdict in April that found him guilty of killing Seth Wallace.
During Dove’s trial, his defense did not dispute that he shot Wallace but argued that there was no intent to kill. According to court records, Wallace was shot multiple times in May 2024 and succumbed to his injuries two weeks later at UVA Health.
At the sentencing hearing, the commonwealth emphasized that Dove had shown no remorse for his actions. Wallace’s mother delivered a victim impact statement, describing the devastating effect of her son’s death. Dove’s defense team called for a more lenient sentence, submitting character letters on his behalf and citing his struggles with PTSD, as well as issues with substance and alcohol use.
The mother of Dove’s child also testified during the hearing. Before the sentence was handed down, Dove addressed the court. “I’m sorry for what I did,” he said, expressing regret for the shooting. The hearing also coincided with proceedings for Kaylee Turner, who has been accused of involvement in the case, per WHSV.
Turner was originally scheduled for a jury trial in June on charges of accessory to first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. However, her trial was withdrawn, and she is now facing a plea hearing at 1 p.m. Friday in Waynesboro Circuit Court.
The case highlights the devastating consequences of the shooting, as well as the legal complexities that arise when co-defendants are involved. Dove’s sentencing to life in prison brings closure to Wallace’s family, though the emotional impact remains profound. Court observers noted the tension in the room as both sides presented their statements, reflecting the gravity of the crime and the lasting effect on the community.
The Waynesboro Circuit Court continues to address related proceedings, with Turner’s plea expected to determine her legal outcome later Friday. Meanwhile, Dove will serve his sentence, marking the end of his trial and the beginning of a life behind bars.
