In a move drawing both political praise and backlash, House Republicans have proposed renaming the Kennedy Center Opera House in honor of First Lady Melania Trump. The proposal, introduced as an amendment to the fiscal year 2026 Interior Department spending bill, marks yet another effort by GOP lawmakers to enshrine the Trump legacy through the renaming of public landmarks.
Representative Mike Simpson, who spearheaded the amendment, defended the proposal as a tribute to Melania Trump’s contributions to the arts.
“First Lady Melania Trump serves as the Honorary Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center. Naming a theater after her is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts,” said Simpson in a statement to the Daily Beast. He added, “As Chairman of the House Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee—which oversees federal funding for capital repairs and operations and maintenance at the Kennedy Center—I am proud to honor her support and commitment in promoting the arts and humanities.”

Democratic lawmakers were quick to denounce the move, pointing to Republican efforts to cut funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Kennedy Center itself.
The proposed renaming would mark the first time any of the Kennedy Center’s three major performance venues—the Eisenhower Theater, Opera House, or Concert Hall—has been renamed, potentially eroding the center’s long-standing bipartisan cultural identity and linking it more explicitly to the Trump administration.
This development follows a series of Trump-centric appointments and changes to the Kennedy Center. In February, President Donald Trump fired members of the board of trustees and named himself chairman. He subsequently appointed loyalists and allies, including former White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Dan Scavino, Sergio Gor, and Second Lady Usha Vance, as trustees.
In a controversial move, Trump also appointed Fox News hosts Laura Ingraham and Maria Bartiromo to the board. Additionally, large portraits of Trump, Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Usha Vance were recently installed within the center, adding to concerns about politicization.

Despite his heightened involvement now, Trump notably skipped the annual Kennedy Center Honors during his first term, breaking from a tradition upheld by previous presidents.
Last month, the former president and Melania Trump attended the opening night of Les Misérables at the Kennedy Center. Their appearance drew a polarized response: while some in the audience applauded, others booed as the couple entered.
Previously, House Republicans attempted to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after Donald Trump, another effort that stirred significant controversy.
