President Donald Trump experienced an uncomfortable moment during the signing ceremony for the HALT Fentanyl Act on Wednesday, following a heartfelt speech from Anne Fundner, a grieving mother who lost her son to a fentanyl overdose in 2022.
The event, held in the East Room of the White House, featured several Angel Mothers—women who have lost children to the ongoing drug crisis. Fundner, whose 15-year-old son Weston died after taking a fentanyl-laced pill, gave a powerful tribute and thanked Trump for his efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking.
Holding a framed photo of her son, Fundner concluded her emotional speech and offered the picture to Trump as a symbolic gesture. “You can have that. Would you like that? I would love to give that to you,” she said to the Mirror US.
Trump appeared to respond inaudibly and, rather than accepting the photograph, handed it back to her and quickly guided her away from the podium. The moment sparked awkwardness in the room, though Trump continued with the event.
Notably, many pro-Trump social media accounts shared Fundner’s remarks but cut the video feed immediately after she finished speaking, omitting the awkward exchange that followed.
The HALT Fentanyl Act, which Trump was signing at the time, had passed Congress with bipartisan support. The law permanently classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, strengthening law enforcement’s ability to prosecute traffickers.
Fundner has been a vocal supporter of Trump since her son’s death and has made multiple public appearances advocating for stricter border and drug policies. In 2024, she testified before the House Judiciary Committee and later spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where she laid blame squarely on Democratic leadership.
“And fentanyl still found my son,” Fundner said at the RNC. “I hold Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, the border czar — what a joke — and Gavin Newsom and every Democrat who supports open borders responsible for the death of my son.”
Data from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) confirms that most fentanyl entering the U.S. is smuggled through the U.S.-Mexico border. While deaths from synthetic opioids have surged over the past decade, CDC data shows a slight decline in overdose deaths, from 73,838 in 2022 to 72,776 in 2023.
Trump has frequently used the fentanyl crisis to push for emergency powers, including invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 to impose unilateral import tariffs, citing the need to protect national health and security.
