Alabama Mother Allegedly Killed Husband While He Slept in Bed

An Alabama woman is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting her husband while he slept early Saturday morning, authorities say. The couple’s five children were home at the time and called 911 after hearing gunfire.

Shawn Christian Watson, 38, was found dead in his bed when Dale County deputies arrived at the family’s home around 2 a.m., according to reports from Al.com. His wife, Annie Huffstutler, 42, was arrested hours later and is being held without bond at Dale County Jail.

Sheriff Mason Bynum confirmed that the children, ranging in age but all minors, did not witness the shooting but heard the gunshot and immediately alerted authorities. “We believe there were five children in the home when the shooting happened, but none of them witnessed the alleged crime,” Bynum told WTVY.

Huffstutler was taken into custody shortly after 6 a.m. on Saturday. Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive, and the case remains under review. “This is a tragic event for this family and for all those affected by such a senseless act,”.

“Our prayers and full support are with them as they begin the difficult journey of healing and navigating life after this heartbreaking loss.” Neighbors expressed shock over the incident, describing the family as quiet and seemingly stable. “You never expect something like this to happen so close to home,” one resident told WDHN.

The children are now in the care of relatives as child welfare officials assess the situation. Court records do not yet indicate whether Huffstutler has legal representation or has entered a plea. Domestic violence advocates emphasize the importance of intervention in volatile relationships.

“Situations like this remind us that behind closed doors, families can be in crisis,” said a spokesperson for a local shelter. “Early support can save lives.” Watson’s death marks the latest in a string of domestic violence-related homicides in Alabama this year.

State data shows a troubling rise in fatal incidents involving intimate partners, prompting calls for stronger prevention efforts. As the investigation continues, Huffstutler awaits her first court appearance while the community mourns the loss of a father whose life was cut short.
