A civil rights figure in California is under fire after celebrating the news of President Joe Biden’s stage four cancer diagnosis, and she didn’t stop there, suggesting former President Donald Trump deserves the same fate.
Zahra Billoo, who leads the San Francisco chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and also sits on the California Civil Liberties Program, took to Facebook with a controversial post that’s raising eyebrows. According to Chuck Ross of the conservative Washington Free Beacon, Billoo claimed Biden’s cancer was “God’s wrath” – a form of divine punishment for his administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

In a blunt and inflammatory message, she went further: “There is no amount of cancer treatment that can protect President Joe Biden from the prayers of the oppressed and ultimately God’s wrath,” she wrote. Her words didn’t stop there either. When a commenter responded with, “Trump first,” she replied ominously, “His time will come too.”

Her post hasn’t gone unnoticed, and it’s sparked fierce criticism across social media. While CAIR has often positioned itself as a defender of civil liberties and a voice for Muslim Americans, Billoo’s remarks are now raising serious questions about the tone and direction of its leadership in San Francisco.
President Biden recently disclosed that he’s battling metastatic stage four prostate cancer – a serious and aggressive diagnosis. In response, politicians across party lines, including many Republicans, have offered public sympathy and support. But alongside these messages of solidarity, several fringe voices have used the moment to peddle conspiracy theories and, as in Billoo’s case, wish harm.

Although she didn’t elaborate further in the post, her words have been widely condemned as cruel and deeply inappropriate. Critics say that no matter one’s political disagreements, cheering on a cancer diagnosis crosses the line of human decency. Others worry that rhetoric like this, especially from someone in a civil rights leadership role, undermines efforts to build bridges in divided times.
Billoo has not responded publicly to the backlash so far, and there’s been no comment yet from CAIR or the California Civil Liberties Program on whether any action will be taken.
The controversy adds yet another twist to an already charged political atmosphere – and once again shows how online posts, even from officials in respected positions, can ignite firestorms when they tread into extreme territory.
