The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office has unveiled crime scene images related to the case of a 13-year-old boy from Hialeah, accused of fatally stabbing his mother.
The released photos include depictions of the murder weapon—a knife with its tip removed—and surveillance images capturing the victim, Irina Garcia, 39, holding her newborn daughter.
Additional images show Derek Rosa, the accused, standing over his mother. Rosa is facing a first-degree murder charge and has pleaded not guilty, following a grand jury indictment.
The incident occurred on October 12, with Rosa allegedly stabbing his mother as she slept beside his 14-day-old half-sister, according to NBC 6.
Rosa contacted 911 just after 11:30 p.m. that night, confessing to the murder at their apartment on 211 W. 79th Place. Responding officers discovered Garcia with multiple stab wounds to her neck.
Rosa informed the dispatcher that he had sent crime scene photos to an online friend and bid them farewell. Among the released crime scene images is a photo of Rosa sticking his tongue out, sent to a friend post-killing, as revealed by the state attorney’s office, ” the New York Post reported.
The motive behind the murder has not been publicly disclosed by the police. Relatives mentioned that Rosa had no history of mental illness and had a good relationship with his family.
Currently held without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center in Doral, Rosa is represented by attorney Jose Baez, known for his previous representation of high-profile clients such as Casey Anthony, Aaron Hernandez, and Harvey Weinstein.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Rosa could spend the rest of his life in jail or even face the death penalty, per Florida law.
